Drivers caught using their mobile phone behind the wheel will now be hit with six points on their licence and a £200 fine.

The Department for Transport has been planning a crackdown on the offence for some time now, and previously suggested that a four-point and £150 penalty would deter drivers.

The new penalties are double the previous ones, and the introduction of the tougher legislation comes just days after an RAC survey found a considerable rise in mobile phone use behind the wheel.

Maybe the police should stamp on the phone in question when a person is caught. That would probably put people off more, after all iPhones are what, £600 each?

Distractions in cars are getting worse, its not just guys/gals on phones or even worse texting, taking their eyes off the road for 10 to 20 seconds at a time, but also....

Multi-function Displays in cars, requiring more interaction to get what you want on screen, like radio, Memory stick, internet connected items, etc. these all take your eyes off the road far too much.

Of course the all time distraction of all is screaming kids in the back, and a wife hitting you in the sides to tell them to shut up :D

In the right direction, but still not harsh enough for my liking.
Absolutely no excuse whatsoever to talk on phone with it in your hand, loads of cheap handsfree/bluetooth kits available.
6 month driving ban and £1000 fine would make more selfish, inconsiderate drivings think twice about doing it in my opinion.
