I am certain I read somewhere that Ford recommend using the performance fuels as opposed to the standard stuffCould anyone clarify - and would there much of a difference, apart from the cost!?

Buying performance fuels are for performance cars, not your every day run of the mill.
If you think you get more miles, then think how much more it cost you.
It's only needed for high performance engines. Other than that its just a placebo effect as you think your putting in something better cause it costs more

Do not agree, I've used supermarket diesel, and tried a tank full of shell v power and found noticeable difference.
Car warms up quicker
Engines runs sweeter
And a few more miles to the gallon
And because the cost of fuel is low at the moment it's worth trying it for yourself.

All I've ever read is summed up by Maleko and Mitch above - sorry guys - everyone says something different! Some swear by an improvement, others can't notice anything.
